1986: the start of our video art collection
In the mid-eighties the first video works are added to the Rijksakademie collection.
‘Landval’ by conceptual artist Titia Ex (RA 84/88) is one of the first documented video works in our collection. Now, almost thirty-five years later, the collection includes 112 video works by, among others, Michael Blum (RA 00/01), Runa Islam (RA 97/98), Shahryar Nashat(RA 01/02), Janis Rafa (RA 13/14), Basir Mahmood (RA 16/17) and Yashaswini Raghunandan (RA 18/19), of whom 'Blind Ride' is the most recent addition.
From the mid-1980s, the Rijksakademie structurally purchases work, including video work, from artists working at the Rijksakademie. This so as to document developments within the artistry. A purchasing committee with external jury members makes an annual selection. In 1986 these were Geert van Beijeren, Alexander van Grevenstein, Luce van Rooy, Willem van Toorn, Pauline Terreehorst and Frans Spruijt. In addition to the work of Titia Ex, video work by Frederieke Jochems (RA 82/86) and Sigrun Hardardottir (RA 82/86) was also purchased that year.
This purchasing policy changed from the late 1990s. It was decided to no longer distinguish between one or the other artist, but to include a work of all artists in the collection from their development period within the Rijksakademie. To this date, every artist submits a work that becomes part of the Rijksakademie's art collection at the end of their two-year work period. This also includes video works every year. The main difference with more than thirty years ago: the carrier. No longer U-matic tapes but digitally supplied files with a “certificate of authenticity”
Titia Ex was affiliated with the Rijksakademie from 1984 to 1988. Although she was involved in film and photography at the beginning of her career, she is now internationally known for her monumental light artworks.
Yashaswini Raghunandan was affiliated with the Rijksakademie from 2018 to 2019. She makes installations, videos, short films and feature films, which are often non-linear and transmit a strong sense of dislocation and otherworldliness. Her first full-length film, the docu-fiction "That Cloud Never Left" premiered in 2019 in the Bright Future programme of International Film Festival Rotterdam.
